Arlene Ostendorf, 87, of Wayne, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the Wakefield Health Care Center.
Services will be held Saturday, March 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. The Rev. Jeanne Madsen and Chaplain Deb Hammer will officiate. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time at the church with the family present. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Arlene Marie Ostendorf was born March 10, 1930 at Eustis to Arthur and Helen (Keller) Hueftle. She attended high school in Eustis where she took a Normal Training Course so she could teach school immediately upon graduation. She taught school in Dawson County one year before attending Wartburg College, Iowa for two years. She spent two summers attending classes in Lincoln then taught school in West Bend, Iowa and Lexington. Arlene married LaVern Ostendorf on June 12, 1955 in Eustis. In 1969, LaVern, Arlene, and their five children moved to Wayne, where at the age of 40, Arlene went back to college and graduated with her teaching degree in December, 1970. Following that, she taught in a number of (one room K-8) country schools around Wayne.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Until recent years, Arlene was a member of Wayne County Retired Teachers and Minerva Club. She also enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles, playing cards and Scrabble with family and friends. In her earlier years, Arlene spent time bowling, doing ceramics, swimming, singing, playing the piano, scrapbooking and was a good cook (adding just a touch of lemon to her homemade ice cream).
Survivors include her children, Lane (Carol) Ostendorf of Sioux City, Iowa, Vicky (Tom) Jones of Johnson, Beth (Vaughn) Glassmeyer of Ft. Collins, Colo., Rhonda (Mike) Lutt of Wayne and Rebecca Onderstal of Wayne; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brothers, Alan (Delores) Hueftle of Eustis and Marvin (Pat) Hueftle of Omaha; brother-in-law, Kenneth Rieker of Gothenburg; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LaVern on March 9, 2016; infant son, Larry LeRoy at birth; infant grandson, Michael George Ostendorf at birth; and sister, Lois Rieker.
Pallbearers will be Arlene’s grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Seth Onderstal, Grant Onderstal, Sheldon Onderstal, Dustin Lutt, Reggie Ruhl, Andy Mohning, Preston Fischer, Danny Ostendorf, Pete Taber, Gus Heller, Nate Simpson, Matt McGibney, Jeremy Stubbs and Dan Gallegos.
