Carl H. Paustian Sr

Carl H. Paustian Sr., 81, of Hoskins, died Monday, April 29, 2019 at his residence in rural Hoskins.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 2 at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk with The Rev. Ray S. Wilke officiating the service. Burial will take place at the Hoskins City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at Stonacek Funeral Chapel. 

Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk is in charge of the arrangements.

Born March 14, 1938 in Keil, Germany, Carl H. Paustian Sr. was the son of Ernest and Paula (Rehdus) Paustian. He attended eight years of education in Burg Fehmarn, Germany, and lived in Burg Fehmarn, Germany, until Jan. 10, 1955. Carl came to the United States from Burg auf Fehmarn, Germany, on Jan. 10, 1955 with his mother, Paula, and lived on a farm near Plainview.

Carl later enlisted in the U.S. Army from Oct. 9, 1957 to Feb. 10, 1958. After returning from the Army, Carl worked for area farmers, Alvin Temme, for a year, and then for Mike Deck for 10 years. During this time, Carl became a United States citizen in 1960. Carl loved to go to Riverside Ballroom in Norfolk and also enjoyed polka dancing. Carl married Carolyn Hank on Aug. 1, 1960 and had three children, Ernie, Mike and Carl Jr. Carl farmed in the Carroll area for 25 years. There he raised hogs, cattle and had a large dairy operation.

After farming, Carl moved to the Hoskins area and worked for Winside Co-op and area farmers for a couple of years. He worked for Pilger Sand & Gravel and then worked for Matteo Sand & Gravel for the past 18 years. Carl married Mary Janke on March 9, 2001 in Yankton, S.D. Carl always had cattle and horses that he enjoyed taking care of, as well as raising German Shepherds. He had a deep love for his horses including his draft horse “Magic.” Carl loved his family and always enjoyed seeing his grandchildren. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Winside.

Survivors include his spouse, Mary Paustian of Hoskins; his children, Ernie (Tammy) Paustian of Carroll, Mike Paustian of Wayne and Carl Jr. (Deanna) Paustian of Hoskins; stepchildren Wendy Escalante of Winside, Jessica (Louis) Genereux of Bartlett, Misty Wylie (Michael Damme) of Winside and Mike (Cammy) Janke of Winside; 26 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Paula, and a grandson, Joe.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Hahn, Jacob Paustian, Jeff Paustian, Daniel Paustian, Lucas Paustian and Chuck Langenberg. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Vanosdall and all Matteo Sand & Gravel employees.
