Dean Sorensen, 81, died on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 peacefully at Magnolia Manor in Inman, S.C.
He was laid to rest next to his wife of 51 years, Marsha, on Friday, April 5 in Travelers Rest, S.C.
Memorials should be directed to the First Baptist Church of Wayne in respect to the many wonderful times with friends and family who directly link back to this centering point.
Harold Dean Sorensen was born in Wayne on Aug. 4, 1937, the son of Harold and Ardyce Sorensen. Dean graduated from Wayne Prep in 1955. In 1963 he married Marsha Hoogner and farmed northwest of Wayne. Dean spent eight years in the National Guard and was later active in both the National Farmers Organization (NFO) and Gideons. In 1985 he transitioned from farming to over-the-road trucking where he spent the next 21 years. In 2006 Dean was honored for driving 2 million consecutive accident free miles (as he would have said ‘80 times around the world’). During his travels he often enjoyed being able to visit relatives and friends who lived all over the country.
Dean and Marsha moved to Austin, Texas in 1998 and subsequently to South Carolina in 2008. In 2007 Dean retired from trucking and became the full time care giver to Marsha until she passed away in 2014. Dean had a strong work ethic, loved people, and had an encouraging joyful spirit. His strong faith in the beloved Son and a belief in a magnificent future yet to come drove his insatiable desire to read, learn, and share.
Survivors include his daughter Susan (Don) Lowcavage, Campobello, S.C, and four grandchildren, Trinity, Faith, Isabel and Logan Sorensen, all of McCook; his sister-in-law, Judy Sorensen of Wayne; niece, Jeanne Ann (Dan) Kardell of Wayne; nephew, Steve Sorensen; brothers-in-law Lanny (Laverne) Hoogner of Blair and Joedy (Caroll) Hoogner of Houston, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his wife in 2014; son, David in 2017; parents; brother, Richard (Dick) Sorensen; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Don Pippitt; and nephew, Rick Pippitt.
