Douglas Merle Schwarten was born July 21, 1957 to Merle and Lois (Stipp) Schwarten in Wakefield. He grew up with two brothers, Randy and Brad, and a sister, Kathy. He attended Wakefield Public Schools and graduated in 1975. He worked at Salmon Well in Wakefield and later for Great Dane Trailers in Wayne. He also enjoyed owning the Rain Tree liquor store in Wayne for several years. Other employment opportunities he enjoyed were Younkers and Region V Services during his time in Lincoln.

Doug was united in marriage to Paula (Kuhl) Schwarten from 1980 to 2015. They had two children, Michael and Megan, in 1988. The family lost Megan to the Heavenly Father in 1999. Michael moved to Lincoln in 2008 and Doug and Paula followed in 2010. Doug was a wonderful, devoted father. He enjoyed his many friends and loved helping others. He will be remembered for his contagious smile and sense of humor.

He enjoyed many hobbies and interests including taxidermy and woodworking. He wouldn't have been a Schwarten without the love of hunting and fishing, which started with his dad and brothers and was later shared with his son. He enjoyed many family vacations to Lake Minnewaska in Minnesota and many deer hunts around Wakefield and Bassett. Doug loved to cook and host barbecues for his friends. He was an avid Husker fan and would send the family dogs into hiding with his enthusiastic shouts.

Doug was well-known for his ability to connect with people and create numerous friendships. He cherished each relationship immensely. Closest to his heart was his son, Michael. He helped fill Michael's life with the love of fishing, hunting, travel and many laughs.

Survivors include his son, Michael of Lincoln; a brother, Randy (Christine)  Still of Denver, Colo. and his sister, Kathy (Randy) Bird of Wayne; nephews Brian, Derek and Chris; nieces Michelle and Erin; cousins Teri, Tom, Tim and Tricia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Megan, and his older brother, Brad.
