In 1950 he was drafted into the United States Army and served as Staff Sergeant in Korea during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1952 he returned to Nebraska. On Dec. 2, 1955 he married Reta Barg in Wakefield and the couple had four children, Michael, Linda, Carey and Terry. The couple farmed together near Emerson until 1968. They then moved to Wayne where Earl worked for Marra Home Improvement and later as a farm hand for Ivan Freese. He worked for Wayne County in 1983 as a heavy equipment operator. Earl retired from the county in 2009 at the age of 82. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working in the garden, and spending time with his family.
