Gerthy M. Johnson
Gerthy M. Johnson, 98, of Norfolk formerly of Winside, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.
Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winside. The Rev. Harrison Goodman will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with family present. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery at Concord.
Memorials may be directed to the Johnson family for later designation.
Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.
Gerthy May Johnson was born May 10, 1920, on a farm near Concord to Rudolph and Lena (Weseloh) Swanson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church northeast of Concord. Gerthy attended Myrtle Creek Country School and District #30 east of Concord. She worked at a meat market in Concord and later a grocery store in Wayne. Gerthy married Milton A. Johnson on Aug. 2, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church rural Concord. They moved to Mineral Wells, Texas where they lived until November of 1945. In the spring of 1946, the couple moved to a farm southwest of Concord until the fall of 1957, when they moved to a farm near Winside. In 1973 the couple retired and moved to Norfolk. Gerthy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winside.
Survivors include her children, Roger (Karmen) Johnson of Norfolk, Charlene Johnson of Middleburg, Fla., Randall Johnson of Wayne, Lorence (Donna) Johnson of Wakefield, Lamont (Karen) Johnson of Norfolk, and Lesa Johnson of Norfolk; grandchildren, MeLisa, Sheila, Larry, Jeremiah, Brian, Scott, Jennifer and Michael; 20 great-grandchildren, Katrina, Kimber, Trenton, Emacy, Zachary, Ashley, Nathaniel, Connor, Kaitlyn, Madison, Keirrah, Jacob, Layten, Sadie, Chase, Bailey, Rylie, Liam, Rylan, and Elliana; and nine great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton in 1987; grandson, Christopher Johnson in 2009; great-granddaughter, Carleanna; sisters, Rose Thies, Elsie Mattes, Edna Dangberg, Lillie Lippolt, and Mildred Dangberg.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gerthy’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Johnson, Michael Johnson, Steve Sample, Larry Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Brian Johnson and Scott Johnson.
