JoAnn Owens, 88, of Carroll, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2019 at Brookdale in Wayne.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne. Memorial visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne with family present. Private family interment will be in Bethany Cemetery of rural Carroll.
Memorials may be directed to Wayne Hospice, Orphan Grain Train or future designations by the family.

JoAnn (Truby) Owens was born in Allen to Jesse and Ida (Geiger) Truby on Nov. 1, 1930. She started school in Allen with the family moving several times to California, Iowa, South Dakota and to Laurel, where she attended Laurel High School and participated in pep club, school plays and choir. She graduated in 1948. JoAnn worked at the family grocery store as well as the telephone office and doctor’s office in Laurel. She attended Wayne State College and taught country school.
On Nov. 30, 1952 JoAnn married Keith Owens in the Laurel Presbyterian Church. When her husband, Keith, was drafted into the Korean War, JoAnn stayed with her parents and in-laws, raising their daughter. When Keith returned from the war, JoAnn became a farmer’s wife, moving to the family farm west of Carroll. She enjoyed every moment of living on the farm, helping her husband and sons, and watching her three children grow into independent adults. JoAnn and Keith lived on the farm until January of 2018, when they moved to Wayne.
JoAnn belonged to Bethany Presbyterian Church, Ladies Aid, Bethany Cemetery Board, taught Sunday School and was church treasurer for over 25 years. She belonged to Star Extension Club, Irvin Lyons Unit 165 American Legion Auxiliary where she was president for over 30 years, Election Board, and volunteered at the Wayne County Fair, 4-H and was a Girls State Counselor. She and Keith loved to dance and belonged to Town Twirlers Square Dance Club. They also were members of a bowling league. JoAnn enjoyed reading, talking, and took a great interest in hearing about other people’s lives. Traveling was a highlight of JoAnn’s life with numerous family vacations including trips to Alaska and Austria where she made many friendships.
Survivors include her husband, Keith; children, Cinda (Tim) Wacker of Lincoln, Randy (Lori) Owens of Carroll, Greg (Wendy) Owens of Wayne; six grandchildren, Eric (Alisha) Wacker, Jason (Lydia) Wacker, Bryce (Nicole) Owens, Stephanie Owens (Josh) Henn, Logan (Kirsten) Owens, and Alexis Owens (Chris Weyhrich, fiancé); and six great grandchildren, Brittneay Murphy, Brooklynn Wacker, Emerleigh Wacker, Hudson Wacker, Maveryk Henn, and Ashton Owens; four nieces, one nephew, and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Ida Truby, a brother and sister-in-law, Jesse and Marian Truby.
