Mark Ahmann, 83, of Wayne, died Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Careage Campus of Care in Wayne.
Services will be held Tuesday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. Visitation will be held Monday, April 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne with family present. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial with military rites will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.
Memorials may be directed to the Ahmann family for later designation.
Mark Clement Ahmann was born Feb. 12, 1933, at Remsen, Iowa to Norbert and Inez (Clement) Ahmann. He attended Trinity High School in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Remsen in 1950. He served in the United States Army. Mark married H. Jane Schmitz on Aug. 27, 1957 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia, Iowa. The couple lived in various communities before moving to Wayne in 1986. Mark began a very long and successful career in radio and television broadcasting in 1956. Included in his work were stops in Lincoln, Lansing, Mich., Sioux City, Iowa, and Wayne. While in Lincoln, Mark was the host of the Tom Osborne Coaches T.V. Show and commentator of Husker Football. His work was recognized by being chosen to the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame, the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame, and Nebraska’s Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame. Mark was chosen Wayne’s Citizen of the Year in 2001. He was the voice of Wayne State College football and basketball for many years. Mark was the Public Relations Director for the American Legion for over 20 years. Mark’s largest hobby was taking pictures. He has over 100 photo albums, filled with family and friends pictures. Mark was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne, was a lector for many years, and a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight, Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Jane; two children, Lisa Ahmann and friend Joe Ybarra of Lincoln, son, David Ahmann and wife Sue of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three brothers, Noel and wife Sharyn of Remsen, Iowa, Hugh and wife Bonnie of Montgomery, Ala., and Leo and wife Nancy of Wayne; sister, Rita Ahmann of Elk Point, S.D.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Clair and wife, Leona Schmitz, Marian Schmitz, Eugene (Butch) Schmitz, and Eileen Schmitz, all of Arcadia, Iowa; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Theo and Barbara Schmitz; son, John and his wife, De; two sisters, Anne Ahmann and Hope Ahmann; and brothers-in-law, Jack Schmitz and Elmer Schmitz.
