Merle A. Glassmeyer was born Oct. 16, 1925 in Wayne to Edward H. and Minnie (Wittler) Glassmeyer. He attended school in Wayne. Merle joined the U.S. Army during WWII serving from April 14, 1945 until his honorable discharge on Nov. 27, 1948. He then served with the Nebraska National Guard from June 20, 1948, until Sept. 1, 1948. On Nov. 30, 1945 he married Clara Ream in Wayne. Four children were blessed to this marriage; Michael, Edward, Merle, Jr. and Karen.
They owned and operated the Gamble’s store in Lexington from 1973 to 1979. They moved to New Prague, Minn., where Merle worked for the city of New Prague. Following his retirement they moved to Youngtown, Ariz. When Clara’s health started to decline, they moved back to Lexington in 2004.
Merle was a jack of all trades.  He enjoyed woodworking, stained glass, working with metal and tinkering on motors. In his younger years he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. The most important thing to Merle was spending time with his family.
