Merlin D. Saul, 88, of Wayne, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019 at Wayne Countryview Care and Rehabilitation in Wayne.
Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 22 at 10:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. The Rev. Michael Buchhorn will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with family present. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.
Memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church Roof Fund.

Merlin Dean Saul was born April 1, 1931 on a farm southeast of Wayne to Otto and Elsie (Baker) Saul. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He attended Country School District #26 in Wayne County and graduated from Wayne High School in 1948. Merlin married Kathryn (Kay) Retzlaff on Dec. 22, 1950 at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. The couple farmed south of Wayne for many years. As a member of Grace Lutheran Church, he served on various church boards and was a former member of Wayne County District #10 School Board. Merlin enjoyed playing bingo and cards, and square dancing with Kay. The couple enjoyed Wayne State volleyball and basketball. They never missed a game as long as their health allowed. Merlin’s passion in life was his family and farming.
Survivors include his son, Roger (Elaine) Saul of Wayne; son-in-law, Roger Madden of Lincoln; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Lorraine (Larry) Johnson of Wayne; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn (Kay). on March 13, 2018 and a daughter, Debora Madden, on March 14, 1995.
Pallbearers will be Scot Saul, Josh Widner, Jordan Widner, Kyle Miller, Brent Miller, Robert Reinhardt, Tim Reinhardt and Terry A. Meyer.
