AREA WRESTLING — Thirteen area grapplers headed to state
Wrestlers from Wayne, Winside, LCC and Wakefield/Allen competed in district action Friday and Saturday, with 13 area wrestlers earning a trip to next week’s Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha.
In B-2 district action at Grand Island Northwest, the Wayne High wrestlers finished ninth out of 12 teams and qualified four for state, led by senior district champion Juan Vergara, who won the 138-pound title with a 9-3 decision over Miguel Roman of Schuyler.
Joining Vergara at state will be Reece Jaqua (120), Cameron Muhs (126) and Reid Korth (160). Jaqua and Muhs both finished third, while Korth placed fourth.
In the C-1 district at Battle Creek, Wakefield/Allen had a pair of consolation champions qualify for state.
After losing in the heartbreak round each of the last three years, Charlie Lopez made it to state with a third-place finish at 132 pounds. He will be joined by Isaac Verzani, who came through a tough 152-pound bracket to finish third.
In D-2 action at Amherst, Winside qualified six wrestlers and LCC qualified one as Ethan Williams finished second at 220 pounds.
The Wildcats, who finished fourth in the 20-team tournament, had four runner-up efforts from Cayden Ellis (113), Koby Ellis (120), Art Escalante (138) and Michael Jensen (195). Joining them will be Jacoby Mann (106) and Gabe Escalante (126), both of whom finished fourth.
