AREA WRESTLING -- Winside wins title by single point
Winside wins 50th home meet by single point — The Winside wrestling team needed a pin by senior Michael Jensen to hold off Clearwater/Orchard and win the 50th annual Winside Invitational by one point over the Cyclones. Jensen pinned Clay Thiele of Clearwater/Orchard in the 195-pound championship match, which gave Winside a 162-161 advantage for the team title. The Wildcats has seven individual champions, including Jacoby Mann (106), Cayden Ellis (113), Koby Ellis (120), Gabe Escalante (126), Tyler Carlson (132) and Art Escalante (138). LCC had two medalists in the tournament, with Ethan Williams finishing third at 220 and Nolan Uhlrich placing fourth at 145.
Blue Devils third at Malcolm — The Wayne High wrestlers finished third in the Malcolm Invitational and brought home nine medals, including three champions. Winners were Reece Jaqua (120), Cameron Muhs (126) and Juan Vergara (138). Mike Leatherdale lost his first match of the season to finish second at 285 pounds. Other medalists included James Dorcey (132, 6th), Cooper Zara (145, 4th), Reid Korth (160, 4th), Harley Wheeler (170, 4th) and Dakota Spann (182, 4th).
Trojans seventh at Wisner-Pilger — The Wakefield/Allen wrestlers placed seventh out of 15 teams in the Wisner-Pilger Invitational and had one medalist on the day. Isaac Verzani claimed first-place honors in the 152-pound weight bracket, earning a second-period pin in the championship over JD Kuhlman of Creighton.
