Blue Devil bats explode in triangular wins

The Wayne High softball team cranked out eight home runs, including six in one game, to post easy wins over Pierce and Boone Central/Newman Grove Tuesday in Albion.

The Blue Devils smashed six round-trippers in the first game against the host Cardinals. Kennedy Maly hit a pair of homers, including a grand slam, as Wayne came away with an easy 17-0 win.

Abby Ankeny got the home run derby going in the second inning with a solo shot, and Wayne hit four more in the third inning. Maly led off the inning with a shot to left and Tori Kniesche hit a two-run shot two batters later. Jamie Gamble and Jenna Trenhaile also added two-run homers in the eight-run inning.

In the fourth inning, Maly cleared the bases with a grand slam homer to center, scoring Allison Claussen, Josie Thompson and Trenhaile to close out the scoring and give Wayne the easy win.

Maly had three hits, five RBI’s and scored three runs to lead the 11-hit attack. Ankeny and Trenhaile both had two hits. Trenhaile had three RBI’s and scored three times, and Ankeny and Nicole Fertig both scored twice. Kniesche threw a one-hit shutout, striking out eight.

The hits kept coming in the second game, as Wayne scored 13 runs in the first inning and finished off Pierce in three innings with a 14-0 shutout.

Wayne sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning and got back-to-back homers by Kniesche and Sidney Biggerstaff. Maly and Annie Kniesche also had two-run doubles in the big inning.

Wayne had 11 hits in the game, with Maly, Biggerstaff, Gamble and Ankeny each getting two hits. Trenhaile, Maly, Annie Kniesche, Biggerstaff and Ankeny each scored twice. Maly had three RBI’s and

Biggerstaff and both Kniesches had two apiece. Tori Kniesche and Kayla Fleming combined on a three-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The eight homers hit Tuesday brought the team's season total to 19, which is a new school record according to coach Rob Sweetland.

The 18-2 Blue Devils play host to Columbus on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Summer Sports Complex.
