Blue Devil softball adds two more wins
The Wayne High softball team added two more notches in the win column after sweeping a triangular Monday at West Point.
In the first game, Wayne scored 13 runs in the first inning and breezed to a 16-1 win over Schuyler.
Wayne used six hits, seven walks and a hit batter in the opening frame. The key hit in the inning was a three-run homer by Kennedy Maly that made it 11-0.
Wayne would get three more in the second on an error, a Tori Kniesche RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Allison Claussen to end the game after three innings.
Kniesche, Annie Kniesche, Kayla Fleming and Nicole Fertig each had two hits as part of a 12-hit effort. Maly had four RBI’s, Fleming drove in three and Annie Kniesche brought in two. Maly and Maysn Dorey each scored three runs and Jenna Trenhaile and Abby Ankeny each scored twice.
Kniesche pitched two hitless innings and Kayla Fleming worked a hitless third to combine on a no-hitter.
In the nightcap, Tori Kniesche went the distance on a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 13 and walking just one in an 8-0 win over host West Point-Beemer.
Wayne got all they would need in the first on a two-run single by Tori Kniesche, scoring Dorey and Trenhaile. They blew the game open in the third with six runs, highlighted by a three-run homer by Sidney Biggerstaff. Tori Kniesche had an RBI single and two runs scored on an error to cap the big inning.
Kniesche struck out eight of the first nine batters she faced and only allowed two baserunners, one on a walk and the other on a hit by pitch. It was the team’s seventh no-hitter of the season and the sixth thrown by Kniesche.
Dorey, Trenhaile and Tori Kniesche each had two hits to lead a nine-hit attack. Kniesche and Biggerstaff each had three RBI’s and Dorey scored two runs.
Wayne plays in a triangular Tuesday at Boone Central/Newman Grove and hosts Columbus in a 5:30 p.m. matchup Thursday.
