Blue Devil softballers win two more on road
The Wayne High softball team improved to 18-0 on the season with two more wins Tuesday, beating Boone Central/Newman Grove (11-1) and Pierce (14-0) in a triangular at Pierce.
In the win over Pierce, Wayne took care of the hosts in just three innings, scoring all 14 of their runs in the opening stanza.
Wayne batted around twice in the first inning, which was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Sidney Biggerstaff and Abby Ankeny. Biggerstaff’s was a three-run shot, scoring Annie Kniesche and Tori Kniesche, while Ankeny followed with a solo blast to center. They both had RBI doubles in their second trip to the plate later in the inning. Allison Claussen also had a two-run single in the inning.
Biggerstaff had two hits and five RBI’s and Ankeny added two hits and three RBI’s to lead the offensive effort. Tori Kniesche added three RBI’s and Ankeny Biggerstaff, Annie Kniesche, Kendall Dorey and Maysn Dorey each scored two runs. Biggerstaff, Claussen, Josie Thompson and Aliah Schulz each scored a run.
Tori Kniesche struck out the side in all three innings and allowed just one hit to pick up the win.
In the win over Boone Central/Newman Grove, Wayne needed four innings to finish the win, blowing the game open with six runs in the third inning.
Wayne scored three in the first thanks to a Tori Kniesche RBI single, a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch. They added two more in the second on back-to-back singles by Kniesche and Biggerstaff.
In the third, Wayne broke the game open with six runs. RBI singles by Maysn Dorey, Tori Kniesche and Ankeny highlighted the big inning.
Tori Kniesche had three of Wayne’s seven hits in the win and drove in three runs. Dorey and Ankeny each drove in two runs and Thompson, Annie Kniesche and Virginia Kniesche scored two runs apiece.
Tori Kniesche threw a one-hitter, striking out 12 and allowing one run and two walks.
Wayne is on the road Thursday, facing Columbus.
