Blue Devils bounce back, beat Eagles
The Wayne High football team played well on both sides of the ball, capitalizing on an early O’Neill miscue and taking a 21-0 halftime lead on their way to a 27-13 homecoming win over the Eagles at Wayne State College’s Memorial Stadium.
After an O’Neill fumble, Wayne struck paydirt on a two-yard plunge by senior quarterback Tyrus Eischeid. Yair Alcantara’s point-after kick made it a 7-0 game midway through the opening stanza. Wayne’s offense would find the end zone again later in the period when junior fullback Reid Korth galloped in from 14 yards away to make it a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
The Blue Devils got another one just before halftime. On a second-down play, after Eischeid rolled to his right and missed a receiver on the right side, the Blue Devils went back to the same play on third down and Eischeid found Noah Lutt all alone behind the O’Neill secondary. The two seniors connected with Lutt making a diving catch in the end zone to complete the 29-yard touchdown pass and give Wayne a 21-0 halftime lead.
O’Neill would make things interesting in the second half. They got on the board late in the period on a 37-yard pass from Mason Walsh to Brady Sidak, then got within a score midway through the fourth on a three-yard run by Kolby Dean.
The Blue Devils were able to put it out of reach in the closing minutes, driving down field and finishing it off on a six-yard dive by Korth that gave the Blue Devils the two-score win and even their record at 1-1 on the young season.
Eischeid finished 4-of-8 for 70 yards in the passing department, completing one pass each to Lutt (29 yards), Eli Barner (16), Tristan Landanger (13) and Korth (12). Korth led the ground attack with 42 yards on seven carries, while Barner had 17 yards on two tries.
Defensively, Korth had a big night with a team-best 13 tackles, while Victor Kniesche added nine and Gunnar Jorgensen recorded eight. Eischeid had six and Barner, Landanger, Caden Janke and Tanner Walling each had five. Walling also had an interception.
The Blue Devils are back on the road this Friday, traveling to Arlington for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
