Blue Devils lay claim to Mid State Conference championship
The Wayne High boys basketball team won three tough games this past week, capping it with a 54-41 win over Pierce Saturday at Wayne State College to claim the Mid State Conference boys basketball championship.
Wayne opened tournament play Tuesday with a hard-fought 57-53 win over Norfolk Catholic at Hartington Cedar Catholic. Tyrus Eischeid scored a game-high 29 points and Shea Sweetland added 10 for the winners. Eischeid had 10 rebounds and Josh Lutt had four assists in the win.
Friday night, the Blue Devils used a big fourth-quarter to come back and beat Hartington Cedar Catholic, 59-52. Sweetland led four Blue Devils in double-figures with 22 points, including his 1,000th career point, while Eischeid and Tanner Walling each had 11 and Cody Rogers put in 10.
Wayne pulled away in the second half of Saturday’s championship game with the Bluejays to take the title. Eischeid and Sweetland each had 14 points, Walling added 11 and Rogers had 10 for the 16-6 Blue Devils.
Wayne hosts Arlington at home on Friday and closes the regular season at home next Friday, Feb. 21, hosting Pierce.
