BREAKING NEWS — THEY DID IT!!! Blue Devils finish 35-0
HASTINGS — Tori Kniesche struck out a state championship-record 20 batters and Wayne held off a late rally to defeat Bishop Neumann 3-2 and finish a perfect 35-0 season with the school’s third state championship.
Wayne broke a scoreless tie when Kniesche drew a two-out walk in the fourth and Sidney Biggerstaff followed with a triple to right field, scoring pinch runner Aliah Schulz.
Wayne added two key runs in the seventh when Biggerstaff doubled and scored on Abby Ankeny’s RBI single off the shortstop’s glove. Ankeny came home for what would be a key insurance run when she scored on a Neumann error.
Kniesche gave up three hits in the game, two coming in the seventh when Neumann got a double and home run to pull within a run. She struck out the side after that to wrap up Wayne’s first title.
With a loss by Papillion-LaVista in the Class A game, Wayne remains the only school in the state to post undefeated state championship season, matching the 34-0 record in the 2004 season. The 35 wins was one shy of the 2003 champions’ 36-2 mark.
