Dendinger takes runner-up in weight throw at Indoor Nationals
Wayne State senior thrower Michaela Dendinger set a new school record and claimed runner-up honors in the weight throw Friday at the NCAA Div. II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pittsburg, Kan.
Dendinger entered the national championship with the second-best mark in NCAA Div. II. In prelims, she had her best throw on her first attempt with a mark of 65 feet, 1 1/4 inches and qualified for the finals with the second-best throw.
In her first throw of the finals Dendinger bettered her previous best mark of 65-6 at the NSIC Indoor Championships with a new school record throw of 67-0. After fouling on her second throw in finals, Dendinger ended finals with a mark of 65-7.
Southern Connecticut State’s Destiny Coward won the event with a throw of 68-2 1/2.
Dendinger will complete again on Saturday in the shot put scheduled for 5:05 p.m. She enters the event with the top throw in NCAA Division II at 54-10 1/2.
