DIRT DEVILS UPDATE — 10’s and 12’s going to state, 14’s win in Iowa
Summarizing the weekend effort for Wayne Dirt Devils teams, results are as follows:
10’s earn trip to state — The Wayne Dirt Devils 10-under team went 2-2 in district play at West Point and earned a trip to the state tournament in Hastings later this summer.
The Dirt Devils opened with two wins, getting no-hitters in victories over Fort Calhoun (5-1) and Tekamah (10-1). Mackenzie Nissen had a hand in both no-nos, striking out four in the win over Fort Calhoun and teaming up with Charli Sievers on the gem against Tekamah, as they combined to strike out seven.
The 10-under Devils lost their final two games, losing to Millard Fury (2-0) and Blair Chaos (6-4) but finishing high enough to earn a trip to the state tournament in Hastings June 29-July 1.
12’s also going to state — After dropping their first game, the 12-under Dirt Devils ran off four straight wins in district play in Bennington before being eliminated and earning a trip to Hastings for the state tournament at the end of the month.
Both of Wayne’s losses came against Tekamah-Herman, who beat the Devils 7-2 in the opening round and ended their district run with a 13-2 defeat. In between, Wayne beat the Omaha Royals (19-2), Edge 12-under (11-3), Edge 11-under (2-1) and Yutan (16-9) to earn the trip to state.
In the win over the Royals, Delaney Kruse and Natalie Kruger each scored three runs while Liberty Titiml, Rachel Hobbs, Taytem Ellis and Caitlyn Mostek all scored twice.
Against Edge 12-under, Hobbs had two hits and scored twice and Kruger, Hailey Schroeder and Hannah Gubbels each had two hits and twi RBI’s. Schroeder also scored two runs.
In the win over Edge 11-under, Gubbels had a double and Ellis had two hits to key the close win.
Against Yutan, Kruse and Hobbs each scored three and Titiml, Ellis, Hannah Gubbels and Sammi Gubbels each scored twice. Both Gubbels and Jersi Jensen had doubles.
14-unders win Sergeant Bluff tourney — The 14-under Dirt Devils ran the table and claimed title honors in the Sergeant Bluff Swinging Into Summer Tourney.
The Devils won three games on Saturday, beating Sioux City Shock (14-2), Lemars Bulldogs (11-2) and Sioux Center Blue (15-0). They kept up that momentum on Sunday, beating Sioux Center Orange (10-1) and Norfolk Golden Girls (8-1) for the title.
Wayne had just four hits in the win over the Shock, but made the most of eight walks to get the win. Amara Hurlbert had two doubles and two RBI while scoring three times. Aliah Schulz, Brooklyn Kruse and Taytum Sweetland each scored twice. Hurlbert pitched the win.
Against Lemars, Sweetland had two hits and scored twice while Brianna Nissen and Virginia Kniesche both scored two runs. Kendall Dorey threw a one-hitter, striking out 12.
Against Sioux Center Blue, Dorey and Hurlbert combined on a one-hit shutout, striking out eight. Hope O’Reilly scored three times and Kniesche, Logan Miller and Alex Harrell both scored twice. O’Reilly had two hits and three RBI’s, Dorey had two hits and two RBI’s while scoring two runs, and Nissen added two hits and two RBI’s. Kruse led the team with three hits.
In the Sioux Center win, O’Reilly and Dorey each had three hits and Kruse added two hits and three RBI’s. Dorey and Hurlbert combined on a three-hitter, striking out eight.
In the finals against Norfolk, Kruse scored twice and Kniesche, Dorey, Schulz and Sweetland each had two hits. Kniesche, Dorey and Logan Miller each drove in two. Dorey struck out nine and allowed two hits in the win.
