Fourteen area wrestlers punch tickets to state

All four area schools will be represented in next week’s state tournament as 14 wrestlers from the area qualified after finishing in the top four in district action on Saturday.

At Fort Calhoun, Wayne High finished fourth and qualified five wrestlers, led by district champions Juan Vergara (132) and Mike Leatherdale (285). Vergara won on a 10-4 decision over Austin Barnts of Fairbury, while Leatherdale pinned his way to a district title, finishing with a third-period pin of Robert Liles from Auburn.

Cameron Muhs was a district runner-up at 126 pounds, and Hunter Jorgensen (222)) and Berto Vergara (160) will go back to state after finishing third and fourth, respectively, in their weight brackets.

In the C-3 district at North Bend, Wakefield/Allen qualified three wrestlers and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge got two into the state meet.

For the Trojans, Cesar Sandoval was a runner-up at 120 pounds, Isaac Verzani finished third at 145 pounds and Julio Sanchez claimed a third-place finish at 220 pounds.

LCC’s two big wrestlers, Ethan Williams and Zach Dietrich, both qualified. Williams was the runner-up at 220 pounds, while Dietrich placed fourth at 285 pounds.

Wakefield/Allen finished eighth in the team standings, while the Bears were 15th.

In the D-1 district at Weeping Water, Winside finished seventh in the 20-team race and qualified four wrestlers for state.

Koby Ellis led the Wildcats by claiming the district championship at 113 pounds with a 6-4 win over Cameron Wilkinson of Neligh-Oakdale, while Carter Jensen was a runner-up at 120 pounds. Michael Jensen and Jonathan Escalante both finished third at 182 and 220 pounds, respectively.
