GREAT NORTHEAST NEBRASKA SHOOTOUT – Wayne teams, LCC boys advance

Both Wayne High teams and the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge boys were among the first-round winners during the first day of the 2016 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout on Wednesday at Wayne State College.

The Blue Devil girls posted a 55-39 win over Arlington, while the Wayne High boys held on for a 56-51 win over the Eagles. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s boys earned a 59-42 win over Norfolk Catholic, while the Lady Bears lost to the Knights 44-16.

In other action, Pender and O’Neill St. Mary’s won in girls action, while Hartington Cedar Catholic and West Point-Beemer claimed first-round wins in the boys bracket.

Action continues Thursday at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.

Pender 56, Hartington CC 50 –
 Hallie Ballinger led three Lady Pendragons in double figures with a game-high 21 points as they edged the Lady Trojans. Kamryn Anderson added 14 and Cecilee Jacobsen had 10. Maddie Wieseler led Hartington CC with 19 points and Jada Cattau added nine.

St. Mary’s 51, West Point-Beemer 37 – The Lady Cardinals got out to a 14-point lead after one period and held off a Lady Cadet rally to win. Hattie Blumenstock had 15 points and Taylor Colman added 10 for St. Mary’s. Abby Dale hit three 3-pointers and led West Point-Beemer with 11 points.

Norfolk Catholic 44, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 16 – Norfolk Catholic limited the Lady Bears to two field goals in the second half to come away with the 28-point vicotry. Drue Pieper led a balanced Lady Knights attack with eight points, with Taylor Gilsdorf adding seven and Chelsea Reifert scoring six. Emily Hangman led LCC with six points, while Katie Leaptley and Katelyn Cook each had three.

Wayne 55, Arlington 39 – Wayne’s backcourt was hot from outside as the Blue Devils came away with an opening-round win. Kelsey Boyer and Kylie Hammer scored 17 and 14 points, respectively, to led the Blue Devils, with Gabi Meyer adding six. Maggie Schmidt paced Arlington with 13 points, while Shelby Kaup added 10.

 Hartington Cedar Catholic started the game on a 22-0 run and came away with the easy first-round win. Stephen Hillis and Riley Arens led four Trojans in double figures with 14 points apiece. Sean Kathol added 11 and Matthew Becker put in 10. Tyler Nelson scored seven points and Christopher Rutar added six for the Pendragons.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge 59, Norfolk Catholic 42 – Jayden Reifenrath helped punctuate the undefeated Bears’ first-round win with a pair of fourth-quarter dunks, finishing with a game-high 24 points. Izac Reifenrath added 19, including a trio of 3-point shots. Jacob Molacek paced Norfolk Catholic with 10 points and Andy Bettenhorst added eight.

Wayne 56, Arlington 51 – Arlington cut a double-digit lead down to four points, but couldn’t finish off the comeback as Wayne hung on for the first-round win. Three Blue Devils finished in double figures, led by Payten Gamble’s 15 points. Grayson McBride added 14 and Jack Evetovich put in 11. Arlington was led by Jackson Borgman with 15 points, Andy Theiler with 13 and Jake Vogt with 10.
