Hot start helps LCC to 75-47 win in D-1 state tournament
LINCOLN — Paxton hoped to keep LCC’s high-scoring senior Noah Schutte in check, and they did a good job of doing that early on.
There was just one problem — they didn’t account for the other Bears in the pack.
Especially Evan Haisch.
The sophomore forward caught fire in the early going, draining four 3-pointers in the opening period to get the Bears off to a hot start on their way to a 75-47 win over Paxton in the opening round of the Class D-1 State Boys Basketball Championships Thursday morning at Lincoln East High School.
Haisch gave LCC the lead early in the opening period with a trey from the right wing, then warmed up midway through the first period with three straight bombs that highlighted a 15-0 run to give the Bears a 22-4 first-quarter lead.
The game was never in doubt after that.
Evan Schmit hit back-to-back threes to open up a 28-6 advantage early in the second period, and Austin Hall converted an old-fashioned three-point play to help the Bears take a 41-19 halftime lead and cruise to the easy win.
Noah Schutte scored a game-high 20 points to pace the 24-5 Bears while Haisch added 17 and Ty Erwin put in 14. Cael Hartung and Evan Schmitt each had six, while Lucas Rasmussen scored three and Wilton Roberts and Jake Rath had two apiece. Dayo Kennedy led Paxton (21-4) with 10 points.
LCC will face North Platte St. Patrick's in a 9 a.m. semifinal Friday at the Devaney Center.
