Juniors shut out Lakeview, Wayne Seniors hang on for win
The Wayne Juniors improved to 11-0 on the season behind a three-hit shutout by Josh Lutt, while the Seniors scored big early and held off a Columbus Lakeview rally to win Wednesday evening at Hank Overin Field.
In the Juniors matchup, Lutt tossed a three-hitter and got some great defense behind him to help the Post 43 Juniors stay undefeated with a 1-0 win over the Columbus Lakeview Reds.
Wayne’s only run of the game came in the second when Gunnar Jogensen led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Bartos. Wayne had just five hits in the game, with Lutt, Hagan Miller, Victor Kniesche and Tyrus Eischeid adding singles.
Fortunately, that’s all Wayne would need in racking up their 11th straight win without a loss. After giving up back-to-back singles to start the game, Lutt only allowed three baserunners after that, as Lakeview could manage just three baserunners in the final six innings, including a fourth-inning error, a sixth-inning single and a two-out walk in the seventh.
Lutt finished the game with just 75 pitches thrown in seven innings, striking our four and allowing one walk.
In the Seniors game, Wayne batted around in the first inning, but needed two insurance runs in the fifth before finishing off Columbus Lakeview in Wednesday’s nightcap, 8-5.
All nine batters went to the plate in the opening frame as Wayne scored five runs. Tyler Lutt got the scoring started when he came home on an error, Adam Bentjen brought two home with a double and Tucker Nichols followed with a two-run single to stake Wayne to the early 5-0 advantage.
Wayne got another run in the second and appeared to be cruising with a 6-0 lead before Lakeview rallied with five of their own in the fifth, taking advantage of three walks, two hits and three Wayne errors to get within a run.
Wayne responded in the bottom of the inning, though, taking advantage of two walks to score a pair of runs. Brennan O’Reilly came home on a groundout by Miller, and Lutt later came home on a Lakeview miscue to account for the final run of the game.
Bentjen had three hits, two of them doubles, and two RBI’s to lead a five-hit effort for the 11-3 Seniors. Tyler Lutt scored three times and Nichols had two RBI in the contest. Bentjen picked up the win, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out seven. Payten Gamble got the final out to earn the save.
The Juniors play Thursday at Yankton, while the boys are home Friday to face Laurel. The Juniors are back home Saturday to host Bennington before the two teams travel to Pierce on Monday.
