Juniors stay unbeaten, Seniors win in extras
The Wayne American Legion Post 43 Juniors and Seniors came away with hard-fought wins on the road Monday at Ponca.
In the Juniors game, Wayne used a big third and fourth inning to outscore the Ponca nine, 11-8.
Wayne got on the board in the first on an RBI single by Reid Korth, scoring Trevor DeBoer. Ponca tied it in the bottom of the first and scored again to take a 2-1 lead before Wayne erupted for the first of back-to-back big innings.
In the third, Gunnar Jorgensen singled Hagan Miller home to tie the game and Deboer followed with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Jacob Kneifl sent Jorgensen home with a groundout to short and Korth scored on a sarifice fly by Brock Hopkins to make it a 5-2 game.
Ponca scored two to get back within a run, but Wayne put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth with five more runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Victor Kniesche and a two-run single by Korth. Kneifl also had an RBI double in the big inning.
Jorgensen and Korth both had two hits to lead the nine-hit attack for the 10-0 Juniors. Kniesche picked up the win in relief of Tyrus Eischeid, with Drew Buck finishing off the save.
The Seniors needed extra innings to get back on the winning track, coming from behind to force the bonus baseball and ending with a 4-3 win over Ponca.
Wayne scored in the top of the third when pinch-runner Josh Lutt scored on a fielding error. Ponca got runs in the third and fourth and took a 2-1 lead into the seventh, where Wayne tied the game on another error that brought Lutt home to make it 2-2.
Three straight singles in the eighth loaded the bases, and Payten Gamble was hit by a pitch to bring home Miller. Ponca tied the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Wayne got the game-winner in the ninth on a Tucker Nichols double that scored Miller, who reached on a two-out walk.
Gamble, Nichols, Jorgensen and Zane Jackson each had two hits as Wayne outhit Ponca 11-9. Gamble got the win in relief of Jackson, who struck out seven and walked two in 7 1/3 innings of work. Gamble struck out three in 1 2/3 innings.
Wayne hosts Columbus Lakeview on Wednesday at Hank Overin Field. The Juniors game starts at 5:45 p.m., with the Seniors to follow at 8 p.m.
