Late goal helps WIldcats salvage 1-1 draw
Junior forward Brooke Buzzell scored a goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation to help Wayne State College register a 1-1 draw with St. Ambrose in non-conference women’s soccer action Friday in Davenport, Iowa.
St. Ambrose scored the first goal of the contest at the 43:16 mark of the first half for a 1-0 lead, but Wayne State came back in the second half and knotted the score at the 78:40 mark as Buzzell recorded her second goal of the season with an assist from Sophie Ketchmark.
Wayne State ended the game with a 10-9 advantage in shots and 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats had one more corner kick than St. Ambrose (4-3) while the Fighting Bees were whistled for eight fouls compared to six on Wayne State.
Buzzell led the Wildcats with her second goal of the year. Alexis Strothers was credited with two shots to lead the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Rachel Grisham recorded four saves while allowing one goal in the contest.
Wayne State (1-1-2) returns to Northern Sun Conference play next weekend, hosting Minot State Saturday at 1 p.m. and the University of Mary Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Pitch.
