Softball team’s 19-game losing streak ends Monday
The Wayne State softball team picked up its first conference win and ended a 19-game losing streak Monday in the second game of a doubleheader with University of Mary at the Chapman Complex.
The visiting Marauders scored five in the eighth to win the first game in extra inning, 12-7, but the Wildcats came back and held off a late Marauder charge to win 7-4, improving to 10-25 overall and 1-17 in NSIC action.
In the opener, Wayne State got on top early as Ashley Hernandez doubled home Raquel Penke before coming home on a two-RBI triple by Kortney Buresh. Kim Vidlak followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0 in the second.
Mary scored two in the top of the third, but Wayne State right back as Abbie Hix scored on a groundout and Hernandez hit a two-run homer to make it 7-2.
The Marauders came back with single runs in each of the next three innings, then used a two-run homer in the seventh to tie the game. That momentum carried into the extra frame, as the Marauders put up five to take the win.
Maddie Moser got the loss in relief of Makenna Adkison, who went 5 1/3 innings. Hernandez was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Buresh added two hits in the losing effort.
In the nightcap, Chandler scored Vasa on a single to tie the game in the first, then came home on a single by Hix to give the Wildcats the lead for good, 2-1.
Wayne State added two more runs in the second, then broke the game open with a run in the third when Hernandez tripled and scored on a Michaela Smith single. Hernandez had an RBI double to score Chandler in the sixth to close out the Wildcats’ offensive effort and give them their first win in conference play this season.
Riley Vanderveen picked up the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing three hits. Chandler had two hits and two RBI’s to highlight the offensive effort.
The Wildcats are back in action at the Chapman Complex on Tuesday, taking on Southwest Minnesota State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
