Wayne finishes fifth in B-2 district meet

The Wayne High boys golf team posted a fifth-place finish Tuesday in the B-2 district golf tournament held at Wayne Country Club.

Austin Fernau led the Blue Devils with a round of 89, starting the front nine with a 46 and improving on the back side with a 43 to carry the low round of the day for Wayne.

Jonah Brodersen and Zach Urbanec both shot rounds of 92. Brodersen shot 46 on both sides and Urbanec, had the low front nine for Wayne with a 43 before struggling on the back side with a 49.

Shea Sweetland bounced back from a slow start to go 52-44 and finish with a 96, while Peyton DeWald shot 50 and 51 to card a 101 for the day.

Mount Michael shot a 325 to take championship honors, led by Luke Gutschewski, who defeated Teague Stewart of West Point-Beemer/Scribner-Snyder in a playoff after both shot even-par rounds of 72. Columbus Lakeview edged cross-town rival Columbus Scotus by two shots for runner-up honors as they joined Mount Michael as state qualifiers for next week’s tournament in Columbus.
