Wayne girls win Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout

The Wayne High girls came from behind in the fourth quarter and came away with a 45-37 win over O’Neill St. Mary’s to claim the 2016 Great Northeast Nebraska Shootout championship Friday at Wayne High School.

The Blue Devils got a key 3-pointer from Kelsey Boyer late in the game and erased a three-point third-quarter deficit to earn the tournament title for the second time in three years.
Boyer scored a game-high 19 points and Kylie Hammer added 18 for the 6-3 Blue Devils. O’Neill St. Mary’s was led by Taylor Colman with 15 points.

In the boys championship game, Hartington Cedar Catholic held off a fourth-quarter surge by Laurel-Concord-Coleridge to hand the Bears their first loss of the season and claim the boys title with a 61-52 win.

Matthew Becker scored a game-high 26 points to lead three Trojans in double figures, with Sean Kathol adding 11 and Stephen Hillis putting in 10. Mason Forsberg led a balanced Bears attack with 13 points, with Jayden Reifenrath putting in 12 and Izac Reifenrath adding 10.

The Wayne High boys claimed consolation honors with a 55-52 win over West Point-Beemer. Jack Evetovich led the 5-3 Blue Devils with 16 points and Shea Sweetland put in 13, with Beau Bowers adding eight. Austin Streeter led the Cadets with 20 points and Blake Anderson added 11.

The LCC girls went 0-3 in the tournament, losing 45-34 to West Point-Beemer in the seventh-place game. Emily Hangman led the 2-8 Lady Bears with 18 points.

Pender’s girls claimed consolation honors with a 53-47 win over Norfolk Catholic. Arlington’s boys beat O’Neill St. Mary’s 61-45 for fifth place, the Hartington Cedar Catholic girls got past Arlington 40-29 in the girls fifth-place matchup, and Norfolk Catholic beat Pender 51-36 for seventh-place honors in the boys bracket.
