Wayne High girls fall at home to Norfolk Catholic

The Wayne High girls dropped their second game in as many nights Friday, as Norfolk Catholic pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 53-44 win at Wayne High School.

The Blue Devils trailed 14-8 after one period, but cut the deficit to one early in the second period on a 3-pointer by Gabi Meyer and a basket by Kylie Hammer. Norfolk Catholic rebuilt the lead to eight points, but a 3-pointer by Ashton Boyer and two Frankie Klausen free throws got the lead back down to three, and Klausen hit another trey late in the half to pull Wayne within one, 27-26, at the half.

Wayne took its first lead of the game at the start of the second half on a Hammer layup, and the two teams went back-and-forth with the advantage. Klausen hit a triple to give Wayne its last lead of the game, but a Knights free throw tied the game at 39-39 going to the fourth.

Norfolk Catholic shut down Wayne’s offense in the final period, limiting the Blue Devils to just one basket in the final eight minutes and dropping Wayne to 11-6 on the season with the fourth-quarter effort.

Hammer led the Blue Devils with 17 points and Klausen added 11. Also scoring were Meyer with seven, Boyer with five and Jamie Gamble with two.

Wayne is back in action Tuesday at Crofton.
