Wayne State representatives lead U.S. team to 4-0 Brazil trip
Two Wayne State basketball players, along with head coach Chris Kielsmeier and assistant Kelly Kielsmeier, were part of a 10-player team from the United States that completed a week-long trip to South America with a 4-0 mark in a Brazil Tour basketball exhibition.
The Kielsmeiers were joined by seniors Paige Ballinger and Maggie Schulte as part of an all-star team made up of players from the NSIC and MIAA during the first week of August. Other team members were Cassidy Thorson and Jacky Volkert of MSU Moorhead and Miranda Ristau of Northern State from the NSIC, along with MIAA representatives Chelsey Henry of MIssouri Southern, Tanya Meyer of Northwest Missouri State, Paige Redmond of Central Missouri, and Paige Imhoff and Brenlee McPherson of Pittsburg State.
The USA team started their four-game tour last Tuesday, Aug. 1, with a 100-22 win over Itupvera and a 70-59 win over Osasco the following day.
After visits to sites like Copacabana Beach and the Christ Statue, the USA team traveled to Rio de Janerio and posted a 56-38 win over Celso Lisboa, a university team. They closed the trip Sunday with a 78-44 win over Fluminense, marking the first time a USA team went 4-0 on the Brazil trip.
After enjoying some shopping and time on the beach after the games, the team is scheduled to return to the United States on Wednesday.
