Wildcat softball takes two Wednesday in Florida
The Wayne State softball team added two more notches in the win column Wednesday in the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Clermont, Fla.
In the first game, Wayne State used a two-run double from Ashley Hernandez and a bases-clearing double by Abbie Hix while holding off a late Alderson Broaddus rally in the sixth and seventh innings as the Wildcats earned a 5-3 victory over the Battlers.
The Wildcats struck for two runs in the top of the first as Kortney Buresh singled and Kamryn Sparks walked with both players scoring on a double from Ashley Hernandez into right center field.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth. Raquell Penke started the inning with a single to left field. Hernandez and pinch-hitter Taylor Menard followed with one-out singles to load the bases for Hix, who cleared the bases with a double to left for a 5-0 Wildcats’ lead.
Those runs would prove beneficial for Wayne State, as Alderson Broaddus scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to reduce the Wildcat advantage to 5-3, then loaded the bases in the seventh before Makenna Adkison came on in relief to retire the side.
Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a double, single and two RBI while Buresh had a pair of singles with a run scored. Hix had a three-RBI double while Baylee Rial, Penke, Menard and Annie Grammer each singled.
Maddie Moser earned the win with relief help from Adkison. Moser pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Adkison was credited with the save, working the final 1 1/3 innings and striking out two batters while allowing one hit.
In the second game of the day, every Wayne State starter had at least one hit while Adkison fired a two-hit shutout to lead the Wildcat softball team in an 8-0 win over Concordia College of New York.
The Wildcats opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning on four hits and a pair of Concordia errors. Morgan Vasa had an RBI single while Chandler, Hix and Menard added hits.
Wayne State added three more runs in the third. Hix and Hernandez each singled in the inning and two Clipper errors helped plate the three runs.
Wayne State ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. Menard tripled and scored on a Grammer single with the final run coming as a result of Buresh singling to score Grammer.
Menard led a balanced hitting attack, going 2-for-3 with a triple, single and two runs scored. Hix finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and two runs scored. Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a double while Vasa and Buresh each recorded two singles.
Adkison fired a two-hit shutout, allowing just a pair of singles to the Clippers while striking out six batters without issuing a walk.
Wayne State (6-6) will conclude play in Florida on Thursday battling Clarion (Pa.) and Alderson Broaddus of West Virginia.
