Wildcat woes continue in softball loss to Upper Iowa
Wayne State’s woes on the softball diamond continued Tuesday as Upper Iowa swept the Wildcats in a twinbill at the Chapman Complex, winning 3-1 and 12-1.
Upper Iowa scored a run in the first and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Wayne State was able to get a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Ashley Hernandez, scoring Kamryn Sparks, but were unable to take advantage of hits in each of the final three innings as the Peacocks came away with the opener.
Makenna Adkison pitched a complete game in the loss, only giving up four hits and no earned runs. Kim Vidlak led the Wildcats offensively with two of the team’s seven hits.
In the nightcap, the Peacocks scored three runs in the first inning and added single runs in the second and third to take control of the game. A three-run homer in the fourth extended the Peacocks’ advantage to 8-0.
Wayne State’s lone run came in the bottom of the fourth when Wayne High graduate Abbie Hix smashed her fourth home run of the year. Wayne State added two more hits in the inning but could do no further damage, and Upper Iowa scored four in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Menard led the Wildcats in game two, going 2-for-2 while grabbing a stolen base. Maddie Moser pitched three innings in the losing effort, with Adkison pitching two innings in relief.
Weather permitting, Wayne State (9-22, 0-14 NSIC) is scheduled to host Minot State Saturday at 12 p.m. and the University of Mary Sunday at 12 p.m. in NSIC doubleheaders at the Chapman Complex.
