Wins, school marks highlight WSC track efforts

Four Wildcats won individual events and a new school record was set to highlight Wayne State’s track and field efforts on Saturday at the Sioux City Relays and Sunday at the UNK Loper Invite.

In Saturday’s action, Jordyn Pester had the top finish for the Wildcat women, coming in second in the 200-meter dash in 26.44 seconds, followed by Molli Vasa taking fourth in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:07.92. Sophie Noecker came in 10th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.32 seconds.

In men’s action, Robert Sullivan had a pair of second-place finishes in the high jump (6-7 1/2) and the 110-meter high hurdles (15.19) to lead the Wildcats.

Preston Davis came in third in the 400-meter hurdles (56.06) and was fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.47). Noah Lilly was seventh in the high jump (5-9 3/4) and ninth in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.11). Bailey Peckham added a 10th-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 15:53.82.

The Wildcat 400-meter relay team of Alvyns Alcenord, Justin Rohloff, Clay Kramper and Jordan Zautke placed fourth in 43.43 seconds.

On Sunday in Kearney, Pester and Mckenzie Scheil won events and freshman Mikayla Marvin set a new school record in the pole vault.

Pester crossed the tape first in a time of 56.69 seconds to win the 400-meter dash while Scheil recorded the other Wildcat event win, taking first in the hammer throw at 179-3.

Marvin set a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 10-11 3/4 to take sixth place, edging the previous school mark of 10-11 set by Sam Garrison in the 2012 outdoor season.

Kenzie Sullivan recorded a second-place finish in the discus at 148-9 and was 10th in the shot put (39-6). Scheil added a fifth in the shot put at 41-7 1/4.

Vasa took fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.14) with Kim Lowman taking sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.22.

Other top Wildcat finishers included Tian Jones taking seventh in the hammer throw (158-11), Sarah Stang placing eighth in the hammer throw (158-10), Taylor Gilsdorf finishing eighth in the 200-meter dash (27.66), Marin Jetensky placing eighth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.05), Nicole Heeren scoring an eighth in the discus (124-8) and Hanna Lazure tied for eighth in the high jump at 4-11 3/4.

The Wildcat 1,600-meter quartet of Noecker, Jetensky, Vasa and Pester placed second with a time of 4:16.31.

In men’s action, Dylan Kaup and Preston Davis each scored event wins, as Kaup posted a mark of 188-10 to win the hammer throw while Davis ran a time of 56.37 seconds to cross the tape first in the 400-meter hurdles.

Cade Kalkowski recorded a second-place finish in the hammer throw (188-6) followed by teammates Richard Sweeney in seventh (172-3) and Matt Nemec in eighth (169-9). In the shot put, Ben Allen captured fifth at 52-7 1/2 and Jayle Hinkle was 10th with a mark of 48-10.

Clay Kramper came in fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.11), Bryce Holcomb was fifth in the 800-meter run (1:59.70), Mikhail Sands placed sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.35), Aaron English was seventh in the high jump (6-0 3/4), Nathan Pearson placed seventh in the 800-meter run (2:00.58) and Kyle Lowe was 10th in the 400-meter dash in 51.58 seconds.

Wayne State will compete on Friday and Saturday at the Jim Dutcher Memorial Invitational hosted by Doane University in Crete.
